In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error audi tt key Case message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end).
